1 - OPEN COLOUR PDI

Church Interior 16/20
Very well composed, extremely well thought out. Great detail throughout, the windows would benefit from having the highlights taken down.

Desolation 14/20
Minimalistic shot, works well, nice moody sky. Good exposure and a bit of storytelling, it certainly shows an area of isolation. I think you maybe could crop a little of the top and bottom to create a letterbox presentation, which would show us a bit more of the cabin without losing the desolate place.

Burton landscape 15/20
Looks like an early morning shot with lots of atmosphere. The tree is well positioned in the frame.

Ballet boxes 15/20
Clean image well taken, nice pose. There is a slight halo around the legs and arms

Green Eyes 14/20
Beautiful cat with great eyes, if this is your pet I would definitely be doing more pictures just look out for the distractions. You have a bit of cushion at the bottom and the background skirting could be better. Try setting up a shot where you can use a plain background. My attention would then be on the subject not what was around it.

Awaiting the Champions 16/20
A good bit of documentary type photography, good presentation. I’m not a huge fan of colour popping but it works well here as it gives you a focal point in a busy image well done

Did you know they built two Shards 14/20
Well captured reflection, super lead in lines. As the Shard is the main subject I think it needs to stand out a bit more, it’s a little bright at the top try giving it a bit more contrast and a high pass sharpen.

Natasha In Red Scarf 20/20
I really like this portrait fabulous lighting and colours.

Baby Orang 15/20
My favourite zoo subject they are so funny. Great piece of photography, taken in harsh sunlight which creates some heavily shadowed areas on the orangutang, but have been well handled 15

Llangollen canal at Chirk 15/20
Strong lines into the image, well exposed and great reflections. Unfortunately photography is all about capturing the light and you haven’t had a very cooperative day. The sky top left is very bright try a vignette or reduce highlights to darken the area.

Catching the morning tide 13/20
Nicely presented image, good detail and light on the buildings. Post processing looks a little heavy, there’s no detail in shadow areas and a greenish tinge in the sky haloing the buildings

Beautispot 15/20
Certainly got a good crowd having a look, letterbox works well, good tones and colours. I do like the fact that one lady is looking back at you from the crowd, positioned on the third this gives the eye somewhere to rest.

Marine lake sunset 13/20
Some nice cloud detail going on in the image and the bright areas have been well exposed, unfortunately for a sunset there is not much colour going on in the sky and because the light is not hitting the water the image is rather dull at the bottom.

Early Morning Light On The Hills 15/20
Great recession in the hills, good use of the light and shadows, strong triangular shapes leading to the lake.

April morning at Bodnant 15/20
Fabulous reflections, great presentation. Again it’s not been the best day for landscape photography. You have created a moody feel to the image by bringing out detail in trees statue and sky.

Marshes 15/20
Some nice warm colour in the image, I found I was drawn in by the diagonal shadows in the foreground, leading to a gate way to nowhere. The sky has gone pixilated this could be caused by high iso or enlarging an image too much. Taking a good bit off the sky improves the composition for me. Everything else I really like

Shooting At Goal 17/20
Great action shot all participants are sharp, use of flash rids the background of any distractions.

Donuts in the fog 14/20
Well done for even taking your camera out Great atmosphere, the van is well lit. For me it’s a little unbalanced everything is happening on the left, tighten the crop a little on both sides, get rid of the ½ table on the left and on the right bring it into the end of the 3rd table.

Lamplight 15/20
A very graphic image, you have certainly given it some atmosphere, there really needs to be an extra element in the photo something to tell a story. A cloaked figure, a girl standing under the street light or a vehicle even.

Car 43 16/20
Great feeling of movement in the image, the smoke provides a feeling of excitement, and the subject is beautifully sharp. I do find its central position in the frame a bit disappointing with a crop on the left taking away some smoke gives stronger composition

Happy monks 15/20
Competent piece of photography, nicely exposed foreground figures nice and sharp, simple colour tones. A little bright in the background try a vignette to make foreground subjects stand out.

Laos Water Gypsy 15/20
Very vibrant image portraying life in southeast Asia, love the processing which makes the woman and child stand out, the edge of the boat is a little bright and the hat where the sun is hitting it, tone these areas down and this is a super photo.

Reflections of our past 14/20
Interesting Idea, I love the reflections in the glass. My eye is constantly drawn away by the brightness of the sky (top left). I would definitely do a stronger crop from the top, you are already missing the top of the lights and the roofs so take it right down to the lowest roofline and see if you think its stronger image.

Monte Cassino 75 13/20
The Monastery is nicely positioned in the frame, there is good detail in the trees and great recession through the background hills. Landscape is all about capturing light and atmosphere, and it’s unfortunate that you can’t always order the weather you want. You have chosen to include the clouds which I find draw me out of the image. You could add a bit of light to the building and try taking an inch of the sky.

Rainbow over Chain Bridge, Berwyn 17/20
Very pleasant image the moody weather creates some atmosphere, the light is warm on the hills and tree tops and you have some great shapes in the foreground.

Going for the posts 15/20
Great action shot ,the subject is sharp and the movement in the ball works well. Green is always a difficult colour when processing an image and sometimes looks oversaturated reduce the green tones a little an take a little off the sky to get rid of the white line and it would have received higher marks.

Dogwatch 15/20
(I do love dogs!!!), The Image is technically good. For me your title says Dogwatch, I think you could crop it more so the dog is larger in the frame.

Lighthouse at Dusk 17/20
Really nice little image of good quality, subtle colours of sunset are great

Dog not interested in the view 15/20
No the Dog is more interested in you. Beautiful scenery and colours, the snow on the hills is a bit bright I would use a layer mask to reduce the highlights in the top, and rub out the bottom so it stays the same.

Museum of the Moon 13/20
Creative imagery, The moon looks a little bit out of place, you have all the blue around it so it doesn’t blend very well. Try adding a cool layer to blend it in and clone out the white lines caused by the light coming through the curtains.

Taking the lead 16/20
Strong action shot, lots of dust flying around, great angles

Life on the edge 15/20
There is something in this image that appeals to me and keeps drawing me back to look at it again. The red roofed building draws you in and strong angles lead you to the peaks. Isolated is the word that comes to mind. I think it is slightly over processed there is a halo around the peak and there is a lot of noise in the sky. Try darkening around the peak and using a noise reduction.

Penmon 14/20
Clear shot of the lighthouse, good weather not the best time for landscape photos, I like the fact you have chosen to include a bit more of the surrounding area, nice cloud detail in lower half of the sky. I would make it more of a letterbox by cropping more of the sky away.

High Rider 15/20
These guys are adrenalin monkeys, it makes good photography though. It can be tricky choosing correct shutter speed to get the subject clear, but still get a sense of movement but you have done that I would suggest working on the highlight in the tee shirt and pants to make him really stand out from the background.

Norwich Cathedral 16/20
Love the perspective you have taken this from great shot, lots of detail. The people give it scale and lots of atmosphere.

Only a Rose 13/20
As I said a little earlier I am not a big fan of colour popping, I think this would have worked better for me if you had brought colour back in all of the roses maybe at different opacity’s. as it stands the rose is just floating in the middle of the page.

Jumping off the edge 16/20
Very colourful and creative, I like the movement you have created, if I am being picky my only complaint would be the girls on the box are floating around, they are not yet jumping of the edge. Add a bit of shadowing to ground them.

Speed wheelie 13/20
I always like to start with positive feedback so the colour tones work well in this image and before processing the biker looks to be lovely and sharp, he is traveling straight at you and doing something interesting. The problem I have with this is the blur you have used its going at an angle that is unreal, which for me spoils the image.

Tough Mudder Trio 18/20
I thought this was a super shot, the expressions on the girls faces are great.

Train over Borough Market 16/20
Again a different view, interesting to look at well exposed nice and sharp.

Lavender 15/20
The bike is main feature in the image, it’s a great idea for outside the shop. Competent piece of photograph, I would have liked the bike to stand out more though, I do have a bit of a reputation for being a crop queen!!!, I would have taken more of the right hand side and cloned out the cream bit of wall to the left.

Running before the storm. 15/20
Yes it’s definitely not a good idea to be out at sea in a storm, you have captured the feel of an oncoming storm well. Highlights are well controlled and the image is nice and sharp. A little more room to the left would help the composition for me, giving the boat more room to move into.

Letting Off Steam 14/20
I like the composition of this image, the letterbox shape works well with the subject. The processing has let it down for me particularly in the drivers face and the odd colouration of the steam area.

It's not Concorde 15/20
No it’s another adrenalin junky. Joking aside he is nicely framed against the evening sky. The silhouette works well against the warm tones and the light catching the parachute. I would suggest a crop of the image to get rid of the sun and make the subject less central.

Mist on a Frosty Morning 15/20
Love the tones in this image, the sheep dotted around give it scale, and the mist coming through gives atmosphere. All the interest for me is in the top 2 thirds so I would be taking of some of the bottom to make a letterbox image.

Out of the flames 16/20
Very well captured, what is it with these people!!!! Do they have a death wish. Dare I say I would have liked to have seen him bigger in the frame, couldn’t you have got a little closer Joking aside the orange flames have been well caught I would have personally taken of a little more at the bottom where it is a little bright.

You do know you were speeding, don't you Sir! 15/20
Interesting shot, well seen and presented nicely. Unfortunately this is a competition and some of the other images are stronger.

Tower Bridge Light Trails 17/20
Very dramatic, light trails and colours in the bridge are fantastic. Because it is very dramatic the almost black sky sets it off well.

Wittington Castle 15/20
Great crop and presentation, very natural colour palette.

View from Lyle Hill 14/20
You certainly like your landscape photography in your club, I like the way you have used the tree as a lead into the photo, and there is some nice detail in the sky, again I think you have given me a little too much to look at the bottom, I would take off the green grass and lift the shadows slightly.

The Cave Tombs of Kaunos 15/20
Interesting thing to see, well taken image. The caves are the main point of interest for me I would like a closer crop I don’t feel that the boats in the foreground are necessary a tighter crop might work better.

On the stairs 17/20
Nicely put together image, nice soft lighting on the girl, It may be a little too bright on the top left staircase.

Street Musicians 14/20
I like the triangle you have going on here, Very warm colour palette, the main subject is small in the frame, it looks as if they are happy with you taking the picture could you have asked them to move forward so you could keep the violin case where it is or try a different perspective get lower down looking up.

Valle Crucis Abbey 15/20
Lots of detail, nice reflection in the water pleasant colour tones

Queue for Breakfast. 18/20
Great shot, lots of detail in the monks faces and clothing, they create a great lead in line

Sunset on the Beach 15/20
You have obviously put a lot of work and effort into the image, colours work well. Thought has gone into the composition.

Virus Attack 19/20
Very apt for the times we are in very well put together

Wepre Park Cascade 13/20
Nicely composed, great autumn colour. A bit of a grey day, the image would benefit from having the highlights taken down and a little more contrast.

Sun Flower 15/20
Fills the frame, great detail, well presented.

Playing to the crowd. 15/20
Interesting image, lots to look at nicely processed. I would like to see a tighter crop so I can see more of the entertainers.

2 - NOVICE COLOUR PDI

Crackle & Sparkle 17/20
A well thought out image, good triangular shape and colour. The image is very central due to the reflection, I think it would appear stronger if you were to take a small amount off the bottom and darken down the whites slightly on the sparks at the bottom they draw the eye down and out of the image. I do like the creativity of this well done.

Busy Little Bee 16/20
Well captured, it’s not the easiest shot to take you need a fast shutter speed and lots of patience. It’s just lacking a little bit of contrast it looks a little dull, with a little more punch it would have gone higher in the scoring as it is well done with.

Are you talking to me 15/20
I love the square crop it works well, obvious thought has gone into the composition. The subject is lovely and sharp, unfortunately you have a little burn out on the head and right shoulder. Another thing I encourage when doing our beginners group is to tidy up any distractions surrounding the subject. Eg the twigs and bright leaves try a vignette around the edges again to focus attention on squirrel.

Abandoned Farm Rollers 14/20
Simple, sharp and bright image. Well exposed. On the negative side you have cropped of part of the roller frame on the left, and the green is a little to bright, you could try reducing just the yellow on a hue and saturation layer this should tone it down a bit also try flipping the image horizontally so it leads us in from the left. As most of us read left to right it gives a stronger composition.

Freshly picked 20/20
I do love this kind of photography and it has been vert well done fabulous colours and background I LOVE IT….

No day shall erase you from the memory of time 15/20
Highly emotive image, well thought out composition, letterbox presentation works well, the rose looks a little burnt out, or it could have been there a while and was dying Try painting with low opacity red just to soften the white area. And darken down the whitebuilding top left.

What's down here 14/20
Strong lead in lines, colour palette works well, recession is good the arches lead you down into the image where there is a little bit of activity going on, try reducing the highlights at the bottom where the people are to give them more detail. The viewer needs somewhere to focus the eye. You could also have waited till someone came closer and made them a focal point

Red Horizon 14/20
Nice capture of the colours and I like the glimpse of the sinking sun. I would guess you’re on a cruise liner and not using a tripod. I personally find the inclusion of the boat section distracting, as that is all I am looking at. A letterbox crop would bring your attention to the nice colour you want us to see.

Water drops on Dandelion seeds 18/20
A beautiful pastel image simple colour tones throughout and well captured water droplets. Great diagonal lead in line. Tone down the white lines and dots on top 2 dandelions you could clone a low opacity lilac over them.

Golden hour at The Lonely Tree 19/20
Nicely composed image with beautiful lighting and a lovely reflection. The sun is a little bright (Yes I do know the sun is bright) this could be toned down slightly in Photoshop, really nice capture

Rose Without Thorns 15/20
Well seen, beautiful stone work, roses on the bottom 3rd, Nice and sharp. It looks as though its leaning backwards slightly, obviously due to the angle it’s been shot at. Try using perspective adjustment in free transform an pull forward a bit it makes the roses stand out more.

Pause for thought 15/20
I like the idea behind your image, the slow shutter speed works well, the movement gives the image impact there are a few things that are distracting. The no smoking signs, the guy who was stationary just behind the statue and the lights at the top. I suggest a crop of the top and either clone out or darken the others. With a few changes this image would have gone higher.

Small Tug on Marina 16/20
Love the simplicity of the colours. There is a lovely reflection, well positioned in the frame personally I would have had less sky as not much is going on a letterbox crop then makes the boat the main focal point.

3 - OPEN MONO PDI

A cut above 16/20
Great monochrome conversion, you have a good range of tones from whites to blacks. You have chosen not to straighten the circular effect from the wide angle lens, which shows the whole shop. It is bright on the right hand side a dark vignette would help darken the window area. The over all impression is good.

Commitment 16/20
The composition of the image works well, the facial expression on the subject is great, it is well exposed and there is lots of detail. I would have liked some movement in the wheels of the chairs to show that they are in fact moving, the facial expressions say they are working hard but the image itself is static (frozen), do you have any where you have used a slower shutter speed.

Another day over 15/20
This image has been well presented, great triangular shape to the boat itself, the weather hasn’t been the best for you, but the highlights have been held well. Unfortunately the subject matter isn’t as interesting as some of the other images.

Sitting on the overhang 14/20
I do hope this is a composite image otherwise I would be worried she’d fall. I do like the movement in her hair and the lighting on the model is good, she doesn’t look to happy in the photo and for me the composition isn’t working. A square crop would help a lot taking away most of the right hand side you would still get the feeling of danger.

Object Study in Black & White 17/20
A great image, well thought out and well presented. My one little niggle is the bottom right corner is the brightest part of the image, a soft vignette would work to tone it down and centre your attention on the subject in the middle.

New Brighton storm 15/20
Wow dramatic waves happening here, well captured movement. The lighthouse and rigging in the background give a sense of scale. To be honest it is a little bit flat, try a bit of contrast and reduce some highlights particularly on the left side.

A Kelpie 15/20
A well composed image, fills the frame, sharp from front to back. There is nothing wrong with the photography here but there are more exciting images in the competition.

Lean, mean dirt machine 17/20
Well this is interesting; it works really well in monochrome. Great tonal range coming through. The depth of field has been well chosen and the cogs placed perfectly in the frame. An ordinary thing I wouldn’t have thought to photograph that works in this section.

Chimney Pot Cathedral 14/20
The subject stands out well from the sky, lots of detail in the cathedral. The composition lets it down for me, the sky is very bland and that leaves a large area of white to the right hand side. A square crop helps reduce the brightness and also focuses more attention on the chimney pots.

HMS Prince of Wales in Liverpool 13/20
The letterbox presentation really suits the image, there is detail in the sky and dockside buildings. The tonal range is very grey, the boat which is the main subject just fades into the buildings. More contrast would provide a little more separation, and you could try dodging and burning to lighten and darken specific areas.

A beached boat 14/20
I would guess at a wide angle lens, I like the perspective of the boat. One of the things I found with my wide angle was the depth of field always brought more into focus than I wanted, a shallower depth of field would help the subject stand out from the background more.

Figures in the Night 18/20
A super shot, great lead in lines and well exposed. The reflections on the pavement work really well, and the slow shutter speed gives a feeling of time moving on. The group standing still are practically in the centre of your image and are the only thing I find off putting, giving the image a slightly unbalanced look, if they had been closer to you, so say further to the right this would have been my number one.

Shipwreck 15/20
Very dramatic post processing, great cloud detail. This image has a gritty feel to it. There are a couple of dust spots in the sky that could be removed, and a vignette would darken the edges which would draw more attention to the boat.

Any way up 14/20
An Apt title, you have certainly made the image sharp enough to turn upside down. A very good monochrome conversion. I do feel you could have cut down a bit on the sharpening of the image as you have white halos around all the buildings and I would have liked a softer sky and reflection.

Downpour 15/20
Again a very punchy mono conversion, Lighting has been well done and the atmospheric feel to the image is great. Unfortunately I find the layout of the image uncomfortable. This would be easier to explain in person, try flipping the image horizontal so the pavement leads you in on the left, only you would know you didn’t take it from this angle.

Ladybower Plughole 13/20
Great composition and lots of detail the mono conversion doesn’t work for me the sepia tones leave it looking a bit flat, try a black and white converse=ion with a bit of added contrast.

Fully Focused 19/20
Super image shutter speed is not so fast it stops all movement great action shot

Fire Helmets, Dunrobin Castle 13/20
Very brave to take a shot like this. Great recession of the helmets, well thought out depth of field. Metal is always going to reflect light and your eye is drawn to the white dots throughout the shot. You could spot heal or do a bit of cloning to help get rid of them.

Liverpool waterfront 14/20
Slightly different view of the water front. Good conversion to monochrome, using full tonal range from white to blacks, competently taken photograph. I would look to a letterbox crop as the top section is rather bright and it draws attention away from the buildings.

Very close encounter 15/20
Well caught image, it fills the frame nicely and the eye is visible through the water. ISO looks to be quite high causing a bit of noise in the dark areas.

Basingwerk Abbey 14/20
Beautiful detail in the brickwork, technically great. For me it is just lacking that something extra, a person walking in the ruins would add scale and give somewhere for the eye to rest.

On the way to Appleby 15/20
The image was obviously taken on a bright day, but you have handled it really well in the post processing. Great detail in the horse and cart, just watch out for halos that appear during processing. Particularly around the horses ears and top of the cart.

Tresco children (sculpture) 16/20
I really like the position you have used to take this image, great composition, the sculpture is well placed and nicely framed.

Liverpool waterfront from Birkenhead Priory. 15/20
The more traditional view of Liverpool, very well presented and great mono conversion.

An Old Steamer 14/20
The steam engine stands out well from its background. Lots of detail. The back-gound is rather bright and dull little more contrast should help with this.

Perch Rock Lighthouse 18/20
Well taken and composed shot. Great foreground detail the sky is a little bright in comparison to the foreground I would try darkening the clouds a little for just a bit more drama but that said I do like this one.

Model Graham 13/20
A very punchy monochrome conversion. Good pose and costume. I am not too sure about your lighting technique, it looks like a flash gun behind and some form of light from the right. There is reflected light from the one behind which comes across the body and gives a bit of blur which doesn’t really work for me.

Old Timer 14/20
This is an ahh picture, we often stop at this enclosure I love the chimpanzees. The overall impression is that the image is a bit harsh, there is no detail in some of the white areas, you could clone over these just to tone them down a little, especially in the face and foreground.

Puerta de Alcala 14/20
Strong lead in lines, and the image is sharp from front to back. A few bright lights which overall look ok, the 2 on either side of the image could do with being darkened or cloned out.

Singing the blues. 17/20
Well taken image, great expression on the woman’s face. I really like the shallow depth of field. I would look at cropping the pipes off on the right side as I find these distracting and possibly try a noise reduction filter to reduce some of the grain. It does show authors imput and tells a story so these factors give extra marks.

Mind the step 15/20
You have obviously thought about the composition, great lead in line taking us to the boats in the top third. Good angles and shapes to look at, not quite as dramatic as some of the other images in the competition but a solid.

Dereliction 14/20
What is it with photographers and dereliction, be it buildings or boats. . Well positioned in the frame, and some good detail even in the shadowed areas. Overall it is very bright Particularly top right.

Two eyes 15/20
I think this is just one you have to take. Very well taken with some great detail. A few times during this judging I have mentioned lack of focal point, or needing an extra element and it’s the same here, a person loitering in the lower right hand tunnel near that doorway would just add something and provide scale. But well seen.

Killer 20/20
Super portrait great conversion, all works well great story telling.

Millenium Bridge to St Paul's 14/20
Great composition, interesting lead in with the bridge. The image looks a bit flat it needs a bit more punch a bit of contrast would add to the tonal range.

Jodrell Bank 14/20
Great shape to this, nicely positioned in the centre of the frame it works well with the triangular shape. The sky is rather bland and produces a neutral backdrop.

Where do I go to now 15/20
Oh wow what a fabulous thing to see, I’m sure he can swim if necessary. You have captured the iceberg and reflection perfectly; the polar bear itself looks a little soft in the face, with a few highlights. You could try a high pass sharpen and reduce the highlights on a layer so it only affects the bear.

Mother and Daughter 14/20
Competent piece of photography, The buildings provide a great framework, Its all down to personal preference but I would prefer the mother and child to be walking towards me, I feel no connection to the image.

Sheldrakes 14/20
Well exposed image ,strong angle on the boat itself. The subject is central in the frame and once you have looked at it there is nothing keeping you in the image. A tighter crop could bring out more detail. Try cropping off the bottom and the right hand side so the boat is more prominent.

Odd Couple 14/20
Interesting image, I enjoy messing around in Photoshop myself. You have made the main subject stand out well from the background, when I look at the background it reminds me of wallpaper and I can’t see why you would include the woman in that. Personally I would have brought her and the pavement back and made her slightly out of focus, as it is it doesn’t really work for me.

Stepping out 13/20
Another strong monochrome conversion, lots of tones in there. I like the idea of the jaguar coming from the frame he just looks a little small to me. There is a lot of empty background your frame could have been the main subject with the cat stepping out. Always check around any cut out images for artefacts and pull in really close to sort them out.

Tunnel Vision 15/20
Good title, the tunnel walls lead you into the image. Nice and sharp throughout with lots of detail, when you get into the image though there is nothing there. Maybe it should have been titled “during lockdown” then it would be telling a story.

Tango 17/20
Quite a dark monochrome which gives the image a moody feel. The pose is really strong, and the lighting is quite dramatic. It looks a little dark on my screen around his arm and chest it, runs into the black so you can’t see where he ends and the background starts a cracking image though…..

Waterstones Building, Liverpool 15/20
Great angle, lots of detail. The image looks a little flat try a bit more contrast to make the building pop a bit.

Pontcysyllte aqueduct 15/20
Great composition, strong lead in lines. I like the trees on the right which act as a good stopper, the man walking towards you is well placed. It’s not been the best day for photography as the lighting is very harsh, on the bridge and in the sky. Taking the highlights down would help a little but the pathway would need some more work on it in Photoshop.

Walking on the beach 14/20
A busy bit of beach, lots of dog walking activity going on. The water left on the sand gives some interesting patterns and creates a recession of sorts taking you down to the figures at the top of the image. I think there is a bit too much foreground included it would make a stronger letterbox shot. The man walking 2 dogs in the center has a lighter area around him possibly from being lightened.

St Edmunds Knave 15/20
Nice symmetrical shot, the pews lead into the church nicely. Lots of different shapes and patterns to look at. It is always difficult shooting indoors due to the contrast in lighting, there is good detail in most of the shadow areas and you have pulled back the highlights.

The Menai bridge 15/20
Great detail throughout, nicely converted to monochrome. The sky is a little bright and the image has a static feel to it, not everyone likes fluffy water but I think it adds to a landscape photograph a slower shutter speed to create some movement for me would add to the image.

4 - NOVICE MONO PDI

Snake 17/20
Love the detail in the head and eye an interesting subject for mono, well positioned in the frame, there are some very burnt out highlights on the scales to the right. If these were toned down or cloned over this would have been my first place image as it really is great.

Heather 13/20
Portrait shot of this young lady is nicely posed. Unfortunately the image is very soft when doing portraiture you need to have the eyes sharp at least. I would also suggest not including to much off your surroundings a close up of the head and shoulders would give you a stronger portrait.

Come on in 16/20
Very brave, good use of low down perspective to give the image a different look I like the central framing and the diagonals that lead you in.

Low-key concept 20/20
Nice sharp image throughout, a dramatic use of lighting making an ordinary subject a little more interesting. I would have liked seeing just a tad more light on the saucer to the left hand side. A strong image in this section.

Love in the Shadows 18/20
Well executed image, great depth of field. Shadow stands out from the page, just watch for highlights metal is very difficult to take pictures of, darken down the white light on the inside of the ring. (me being picky) great image a well deserved.

V for Victory 13/20
Great fun shooting these images, when people dress up they don’t mind having their picture taken, the square presentation works well, and the subject fills the frame nicely. There is a loss of detail in the dark areas and it’s a little over processed for me which may have contributed to an odd colour cast.

Swaying in the Breeze 19/20
A very simple image strong monochrome conversion works really well, the movement in the grasses gives you some depth taking you into the picture. Although there is no real focal point the taller grasses do give the eye somewhere to linger.

Viking 13/20
A very dark gritty portrait, gives the feeling of being a very old photograph. It looks as if it’s been very dark and the cameras iso is very high, this will produce an image which is noisy and looks out of focus. An amazing character though, again watch for highlights reflecting on metal.

War Leader 1 14/20
Again a re-enactment character quite happy having his photo taken, you are working in very harsh light and this causes very bright highlights particularly on the face and hands the v is getting lost in the background, you are better slightly underexposing than over as its easier to get more detail out of shadows.

5 - OPEN NATURE PDI

Meerkat 14/20
Nice square crop, lots of detail in your meerkat. There are some very bright bits in your background, which need toning down. A vignette would also work to draw your attention to the meerkat and not the background.

Bald Eagle 15/20
Fabulous birds, well exposed, the eye is beautifully sharp and nice feather detail.

Cardamine pratensis flora plena 16/20
A really pretty shot, very nice colour palette. Composition works well the three stems in the foreground are in focus.

Gorse 15/20
The subject fills the frame, shallow depth of field gives limited sharpness but means the background is well diffused. There is a bright highlight to the right bottom which draws you out of the image I would darken all the outside edges to make the gorse pop more.

Goldcrest 14/20
Lovely little bird, nicely perched on the plant. The eye is nice and sharp and is in a good position. The image is a little noisy probably due to a higher iso. It is always a compromise to have a fast enough shutter-speed incase of movement. Unfortunately you have also lost detail in the tail area.

Glass wing butterfly 15/20
Nice and sharp where it needs to be, nice clear background so the butterfly stands out. A square crop would improve the composition for me, taking more of the right hand side at the moment it is very central.

Kingfisher Entering Water 15/20
Lovely sharp shot, great feather detail and good colour The water splash around the neck is super, again the composition lets it down for me. A portrait image would concentrate all your attention on the bird at the moment I am looking at the twigs floating around and being distracted.

Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo persica) 16/20
Really close up portrait of the lion super mono conversion. Great detail in the fur.

Black tail Godwit 15/20
Very well exposed, nice light in the wings. A couple of dust spots in the sky, and it could do with a little more room to move into. You could crop off the dust spots, making it tighter at the bum end and it would look as if it’s got more room in front.

At The Water Hole. 17/20
Beautiful lighting on the grasses and the elephants, perfectly grouped together, they look as if they have been put in position for you.

Bored Stiff 14/20
Great composition, this square crop works really well. There is a lot of detail in the fur around the Chimpanzee but it looks as if the face has suffered from harsh light giving it an over processed look.

Kissy kissy 15/20
A Beautiful capture of these two seals, I do a lot of nature photography and a pet hate is cutesy titles. A factual title especially in a nature section works better a bit of a tighter crop would work for me because I want to see them up closer.

Cabbage White Butterfly 15/20
A well caught picture of this butterfly, they don’t settle for long so you have to be quick. The image is lovely and sharp and the whites of the wings have been handled well. I find myself using the Crop word again but this image is crying out for a square crop, which would then get rid of the bright area on the right and the out of focus flower.

Bald Eagle 13/20
You have obviously though about your composition and the subject fits the frame nicely, the eyes are beautiful. For me the rest of the head has been over sharpened and is very bright.

Monkey with baby 14/20
The monkey with baby comes across really well, the background is a bit bright and some of the greens could be toned down for me the main subject doesn’t stand out enough.

Java Sparrow 13/20
A brightly coloured image . Its very difficult to get a shot in the aviary, as the lighting is quite poor and the birds are very good at hiding or getting high up in the trees. The image is a little too colourful and there are some unusual artefacts going on around the head.

Lionness at rest 14/20
It’s a great new enclosure at the zoo, not always easy to get photos. The colours in the image are lovely and they do give the feeling of a warm relaxing day. I think a more fitting title would be the paw Joking aside it is the sharpest point of the image and the rest of the lioness is fading away.

kestrel 15/20
The Kestrel is nicely positioned in the frame creating a lovely shape. You have some interesting bands of colour running through the background, but they are all sloping left it would be move pleasing to the eye if they were straight and try adding a little contrast to give it a bit more depth.

Two flies on rotting fruit 17/20
Not the prettiest of subjects but very well done the detail in the wings, eyes and bodies of the fly’s is spot on

Dwarf Mongoose 15/20
Very sweet little creature well seen and taken, the eyes aren’t quite as sharp as they could be a bit of darkening would help.

Barn Owl 15/20
Subject stands out beautifully from the background, lots of detail in the owl .You have chosen to put the owl right in the center of the frame this doesn’t work for me, again it’s the dreadful crop word. Just taking off some of the right hand side would direct attention to the owl not around it.

Golden Eagle 14/20
Very majestic birds, taken from a good angle and you can see all the feather detail. The bird itself is lovely he just gets a bit lost in the background. Try darkening down the highlights a bit more.

Peregrine on Woodcock 17/20
Very well diffused background, nicely positioned in the frame. The eye is lovely and sharp. Great colours and detail in the woodcock and moss. There is a little bit of movement in the right hand wing a faster shutter speed would have helped make this sharper.

Leopard 15/20
A beautiful animal, the image is well exposed and the cat does stand out enough from the background. It is a very natural looking shot and these cats need to blend into their surroundings. You have a lot of out of focus shrubbery in the foreground, I would be tempted to crop that out along with darkening down the few small white highlights near the head and top of the image. Only small things but they would make a difference.

Ox Eye Daisies 16/20
A well thought out composition. Big and bold on one side with lots of detail and the 2 smaller flowers on the right that create an interesting triangle added to the shallow depth of field and it works well. It isn’t the easiest thing to get the exposure right for these white flowers and the highlights could be toned down a little particularly on the smaller daisies. A great idea.

Herring Gull (Lerus argentatus) 15/20
I love the shape this gull is making its legs sticking out in all directions. Its eye is super bright and sharp. Detail all through the feathers to the end, you can even see missing bits of feather. Taken in bright light and handled well. There are a large number of birds in this competition that you are competing with. Some of which just have an extra something. A technically great shot.

Common Seals 14/20
Again a competently taken photo, the seals stand out from the sand they are resting upon. For me the composition lets this one down, I’m not keen on the band of white at the top, you could crop this off along with a bit more from the bottom to give you a letterbox with less distractions. Or you could just concentrate on the 3 seals at the bottom . What I am trying to say is that you have just given me to much to look at simplify it a little bit.

Lions family feud 19/20
What a fabulous nature shot, It is obvious you have been shooting in harsh light but you don’t always have a choice, you have caught the action well and cropped right in so the distractions are minimal. The lions are not as sharp as they could be but the image tells a story, in this case out weighing any small technical faults from a viewing distance it is sharp enough.

Siberian Tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) 13/20
Well thought out composition, and nicely presented image. Unfortunately we are not seeing much of the tiger, the foliage to the front is blurred which detracts from the main subject, and he really gets lost in the background. I always like to think of ways to help improve the image I am being shown, and in my opinion a square crop would strengthen this a bit, taking off some of the blurred greenery to the left.

Painted Lady Butterfly 16/20
Lovely markings on these butterflies, the natural lighting on this makes the subject stand out from the background, its background is nicely diffused and the highlights handled well, with the eye being perfectly sharp. Yes the background is a little busy still but it has been well done.

Oriel 12/20
A Great crop and the background is well diffused. The weaver bird is on a good angle. I’m afraid the overall image quality isn’t very good. I don’t know if you have tried to crop in to much. Or another other possibility is a really high iso which adds noise to the image making it look pixilated. You could try darkening to shot and see if that brings back some detail.

reed bunting 14/20
Nicely diffused background, lovely warm colour. I do like the lead in line made by the grasses. The subject is a bit small in the frame, but I do think if you pushed the crop more you would lose detail in the bird itself. Just watch the highlights in the grass as they are very bright.

Snow Leopard 14/20
Beautiful animal, Fabulous detail in the eyes and it’s looking right at you. It is a shame he sat behind the wood which is very prominent in the image, again I am going to annoy you with the crop word. Minimise the Man made elements a square crop as tight as possible so only a portion of the wood remains and the metal supports would be gone.

Short Eared Owl 15/20
Fantastic markings on the owls face, the eyes have been well captured, and there is great feather detail throughout. The tree stump is rather large in the frame and is very bright at the bottom you don’t want this to be the main thing people look at so darken it down along with the white dots in the trees.

Nuthatch feeding 15/20
Lovely little birds that move very quickly. The image has been well taken everything is nicely positioned; the background is well separated from the subject. If I was being picky I would have taken a little more off the bottom as the out of focus area is distracting for me.

Orangutan carrying baby 16/20
Again a great capture the angling of the subject works well. The exposure has been held well even under difficult conditions.

Fallow Deer 15/20
It’s the Antlers that capture your interest in this shot, the image has been well taken, but most of the deer are behind the foreground grasses, these also interfere with the main deer in the front.

Skeleton Petals 18/20
A really unusual shot, very well taken. This is also quite pictorial, and very nicely lit.

On the run 15/20
One of the most photographed things in the zoo I think. The dust rising gives it a sense of movement and he fills the frame nicely. The background to the right is very bright though, and would benefit from darkening.

Mission Golden Eye Tree Frog 14/20
Not the easiest thing to photograph and I think you have done a good job with the frog. It does look as if you have lifted the shadows in the background a little bit too much. I often use layer masks as these let you lighten the whole thing, and then rub out where you don’t want the effect.

Springtime Harvest Mouse 19/20
A fabulous shot. The mouse is so small in comparison to the daffodils. The square crop works really well positioning the mouse directly on the 3rd.

Red Squirrel 15/20
It’s nice to see them making a comeback; The squirrel is sharp from nose to tail and is at a good angle on the tree. The way you have cropped the image leaves the squirrel right in the center of the frame, and the brightest part of the image is the tree trunk, this takes up a large area of your photo I would take more off the tree trunk and place the squirrel more on the 3rd.

Glasswing 15/20
The separation between the butterfly and the background is great. The subject has been put on the left third which gives the butterfly room to move into, I find the leaf and purple flower keep drawing my attention. If you have looked through my other comments you know what to do.

TwoToed Sloth 14/20
I enjoyed looking at this image, what an interesting creature. Good detail throughout the image especially in the eye, nose and claws it’s not surprising that they spend most of their lives hanging upside down, no-one could walk with nails like that. Again the sun has been shining brightly and the subject doesn’t stand out from the background enough. A shallower depth of field and waiting till he moves a bit further away from the trees would help.

Tiger Tiger 13/20
Nicely positioned in the frame, great composition. The lighting looks good too. I think you have had a play around with this as it looks as if it’s had some filter applied to it. This makes it look a little like a drawing or painting.

Weaver Bird Kiss 20/20
Absolutely fabulous I love it. I have spent many a happy hour or 3 in this enclosure, these birds are amazing. Great shutter speed well diffused background what more can you ask. Super image.

Slevin's Albatross 14/20
Great shape to the Albatross the wing span is huge. A difficult image to get the exposure right on and some of your whites on the back are blown out, to get a fast enough shutter speed we have to compromise on our Isi and the image is a bit noisy. A small amount of noise reduction would help.

Robin on the alert 15/20
Great colours in the robin, nice strong angle and lots of detail in the bird. The catch light in the eye is good. The background is diffused but rather bright at the top, Yes I am going to suggest a square crop!!!! Taking a little of the bottom and the top.

Ruddy duck 14/20
What did it do to you A very nicely taken image,I like the way the grassy reflections at the top hold you in. Again the main subject is very central and would lend itself nicely to a tighter crop off the left then it would have more room to look into.

Woodpecker 13/20
Great detail in the bird and tree branch it is sat on, it’s at a super angle too, Again the weather has been very bright, giving some burn out on the white feathers and there is a halo around the bird itself and the tree branches.

Wild Carrot Flower 15/20
Well there is nothing to fault in this image nicely presented, well exposed, sharp in the center. Some of the others just have a bit more of an edge.

Tiger eye butterfly 14/20
A different viewpoint for the butterfly portrait, the colour palette is very pleasing and the eye is nice and sharp. With the shallow depth of field the majority of the image is out of focus and quickly gets lost into the background.

6 - NOVICE NATURE PDI

Accipiter nisus 15/20
Strong square presentation, nice and sharp on the locust itself. A little bit big in the frame

Orb weaver waiting for lunch 15/20
Nicely captured, I like the diagonal lines the light show up on the web, it’s a little bit bright on the right hand side needs toning down a little and its not quite as sharp as it could be try a high pass sharpen to make it pop a little bit more.

Black Admirals Mating 18/20
I think this is the only time butterflies are still . You have done a good job of making them stand out from the background, there are a few highlights in the background you could tone down just to stop the eyes flitting away from the main subject.

Dinner's Ready 19/20
Beautifully caught Robin, you have obviously thought about your composition as he is nicely placed in the frame. The white areas in the background are a little distracting, you could crop off about 1cm from the left side and1cm from the top that would reduce it a little. The robin is nice and sharp with great eye detail.

Redstart at nest 14/20
Nature never makes it easy to get a good shot, this little bird is well placed in the frame, but it’s not in focus enough. The rocks look like they are the main area of focus. Try a faster shutter speed as birds have a habit of moving around quite quickly, I also use continuous focus and continuous shooting.

I know you're in there 14/20
The subject stands out well from the background, the eye is nice and sharp, bird fills the frame. The bird looks a little over sharpened giving it a slightly noisy or grainy look. It could also have been over enlarged. Watch out for halos that may appear during post processing.

I Hear You Knocking 20/20
Fab shot of the woodpecker, well framed, diffused background, good exposure, nice feather detail.

Locusta Migratoria 17/20
Letterbox presentation suits the subject I prefer the side view to full frontal from earlier, you can see much more detail extremely sharp, poor thing has some wing damage but it could be worse. It could be a bearded dragons lunch.

Small tortoiseshell soaking up the sunshine 17/20
Great colours, strong diagonals, great separation from background.

Tree bumble bee on Buddleia 15/20
Well caught these don’t stay still for long, the bee is nicely focused and well exposed, there is just too much negative space at the top which makes the bee very central.

Not So Ugly Ducklings 14/20
An unusual perspective the ducklings are very cute and nicely lit, the duck itself is suffering from the harsh sunlight. Try taking down the highlights and tidying up the white dots in the water.

7 - PEOPLE PDI

Christine 17/20
Very competent shot, in fact as regards handling the camera, setting and lighting it is perfect! This image is a well deserved Highly commended.

Father Pancratios 14/20
A very enjoyable image with a lot of feeling, composition works including just enough of the person, never sure about hands, but on this image I feel they added to the overall image. In the post processing it has gone a little strange around the beard so didn’t make it to the awards.

Howdy 19/20
A very good studio shot, Very competent use of the lights, with good separation from the background.

A Viking 15/20
A studio image, with good composition, lighting is good so as not to blow out highlights on his jacket. I would have liked the eyes to have had contact with me as the viewer, as you can’t see a lot of the face with the Helmet, so eye contact is important to draw you into the image.

Protection 15/20
I so wanted to give this image a high mark, it is relevant and tells a story, it has a message. But the background is too light and blown out, I feel the number and placement of the three people is just right but you need to heavily vignette the two outer characters to make the girl in the middle really pop out of the image.

Divali Girl 18/20
Very tight crop which works with this image, although we have no eye contact, there is a lot of emotion in her expression, nice use of ambient light. This is awarded so I don’t usually offer much in the way of critic as it is awarded, however if it was my image I would crop the right, lose the hand as its not needed and is a little on the bright side. But in saying that – great image.

Clowns 14/20
A vibrant image, possibly a studio image, but not sure the lighting is quite there! Overall it is flat, what makes for a good portrait is light – especially in the eyes. You can add light in post processing.

Dewali Lady 15/20
There is a lot to like about the image, its use of natural light is very well done. The mono conversion works. I do feel the background in areas could have been darkened down just a touch more, light area to the rear of the head especially. I would like to have had the girl looking towards the photographer.

Heavily Armoured 14/20
Re-enactments give us great opportunity to take unusual photographs. This is well seen, close crop to emphasis the soldiers. Just lacks sharpness to the first of the men which is the one you look at initially.

Casualty Of War 14/20
You have created a story from the re enactment. I like the composition, all the attention is on the lady in the foreground but with enough detail coming through from the soldiers in the background. But, I think the very heavy post process has not worked for me, the background is fine, but I would liked just a little less processing on the lady.

A riot of colour 16/20
A colourful portrait, so a very good title to go with the image.
The model has a lovely smile and you have captured the ‘mood’ of the event. A competent piece of photography.

Four hours in make up 17/20
I have to be honest and say that on the first viewing I overlooked this image, in that I didn’t mark it high, but the more you look at it – it is evident that the photographer knew exactly what they wanted to capture in the frame. It is a somber image, which is in keeping with the subject. The colours have a pastel look about them which works with the subject.

Girl with a pearl earring 16/20
A very pleasant image, a good tilt of the head towards the photographer. Almost perfect lighting, just a little blown out on the far cheek. Even so this is deserving of Commend.

Monty Returns 14/20
Good head and shoulder portrait, background is suitably diffused. I think there is a colour cast over the image and it lacks enough sharpness which detracts from the image.

On me 'ead son 15/20
A good action shot, I like the movement as this adds to the overall feeling of the image. I do feel that the photographer has included more than what is needed, a tighter crop to the right would make the player stand out more and make the subject not so central in the frame.

Footie Practice 14/20
Interesting that the photographer has presented this as a mono image, possible to make sure the colour does not distract from the players – I am not sure!
Unfortunately the players that are in focus have their backs to us and the point of interest is the young lad in goal who is not in focus.

Sophisticated Stranger15/20
I do like the look of this character! The background has been diffused nicely with good use of depth of field, so the figure really does stand out. With him being so prominent in the frame, I find that the point of focus to his face is not quite there, if anything the turban which is great – is more in focus than the face.

Gendarmes 14/20
Interesting image as you have captured the inter – reaction between the two police, the background is out of focus which is what makes the characters stand out, but there is not enough focus on the face to take it to the awards.

Old and Modern 14/20
A people shot showing the two very different backgrounds and lives. The colour of the robes that the young men wear is striking and does draw your eye and attention to them, particularly the man on the left. With the travellers to the right having their back to the viewer the image loses a bit of impact, plus the blown out highlights above their heads is a distraction. I think if you have the image and it has more room on the left, there is a picture to be had with just the young man in orange.

She Wolf 14/20
The eyes are great!!! The model has been captured well, the face is well lit. The background I also like with the old Abbey and the mono effect is perfect. But to me the two images don’t suit each other, the model is too well light to complement the background and the background is too dark to complement the model!

Pirate trio 14/20
Great costumes, was the Parrot real?? A fun shot that is not to be missed. The guy holding the parrot and the lady in the middle work well together, not sure if three is a crowed!! Possibly he had the wrong expression to carry the image any further in the competition.

Decadence 15/20
The models are suitably lit; also I like the pose that the photographer has got the models into. I do feel the that there is too much in the way of the room – decay – possibly the models closer and a tighter crop of the image as a whole would strengthen it, it’s a good contrast to have but maybe a little too much.

Bond Girl 16/20
Great headshot of this model, beautiful eyes that have been photographed really well. I like the expression and the tight crop to the image.

Game of Throwins 15/20
A good combination is people and sport, action! Also I like the way the photographer has waited for the right moment to press the shutter, the action presents a perfect triangle in the image which gives it strength. I think that a square crop to not include the five lads on the right would make for more of an impact image.

Girl with pearls 20/20
This is a lovely portrait, the high key presentation has been very well done. It has a gentleness about it. Well done.

Remembrance 14/20
A well thought out combination, to not just have the lads lined up but to put yourself in a position to capture the older gentleman, good composition. Unfortunately we don’t have control of the weather on these important occasions. It was a harsh sunny day with dark shadows, so we lose the light on the Gentleman’s face which is key for the image to work.

Spanish street seller 16/20
Well done for the street photography, not the easiest to do. The man along with his dog tells a story so it captures the viewers attention straight away. A busy background but it is suitably diffused so as not to be too distracting, possibly darkend down just a touch would have helped the man with his dog stand out more.

Warrior and Lady 14/20
I can say with certainty that this is a re – enactment shot – as I am sure they don’t dress like that at home!!! As the photographer you have thought about the pose you want, I think it works. But the lighting used has let the image down, too dark at the top and far to bright at the bottom onto the ladys top, this also has produced a shadow behind your subjects, more even light would have helped the presentation of the image.

Valhalla is Calling 15/20
A very powerful portrait shot, I like the outfit, the character really carries this off well with the stare from his eyes. I wanted the image to go further but, it is overall too dark, just a bit more light onto the face and around the eyes would have lifted it just enough, possibly even side lighting to give it that lift.

Holding On 15/20
A very emotive image, I think the conversion to mono is well suited to the image as all other distractions have been taken out. There is an overall softness in the focus which for the type of image does not bother me. I do feel for it to be really effective you need to see the girl’s eyes – so that the viewer is drawn in to the image.

The Singer 15/20
A very sharp image, skin tones are very well shown here.
I normally would say very close crop of the head is effective in a portrait, but I feel the background being so stark – blown out and containing no detail, gives the image of the man no sense of belonging. Had the man got eye contact with the photographer it would then of invited me as the viewer into the image, as it is, to me there is not enough to hold my attention.

Water Rider 14/20
This looks interesting!! I would say this was probably a very difficult shot to take, movement, sun onto the water plus shadow areas with what look like trees in the background. What do you meter for??? Well done, it’s just a shame there is not enough light on the man himself for this competition, but very good try.

Devout At Prayer 15/20
I did enjoy this image a lot, so much to look at. Well done to the photographer for being brave enough to capture this image. The colour’s are very striking and draw you into the image - I did mute the reds in photoshop to see what effect it had, I feel it strengthened the image immensely, as it seem to lift the shadows on the faces of the people and they were clearer.

I was hoping for a quiet day on the beach 14/20
What a contrast between then and now with Lockdown!! A very colourful image with all the sun umbrellas. As this is a people competition, I would have cropped the top third off the image and presented more of a letterbox shaped landscape of just the mass of people, I tried it on my P.C and found you have a very effect people image by doing this!

Rajasthan woman 16/20
What a lovely image, the colourful garments and jewelry, along with the almost peaceful expression. From purely a personal view I didn’t like the position of the hands, possible because they are prominent in the frame and alls I kept seeing was two fingers either side sticking up at me! I did crop the image to a portrait formate and lost both hands – personally it became much more powerful and inviting as an image, with also a touch more light onto her face!

Rachelle 15/20
A very nice model well thought out pose with a plain black background. I just had a couple of issues, the light to the left of the image is for me a bit too harsh, causing burnout to the arm, elbow and hand across the chest, it just needs the highlights taking down a tiny bit.

Strange Folk 14/20
Well, very good title “Strange folk” I was not sure what to make of them! Interesting processing used – they look almost wax like models or very heavily smoothed, therefore removing all detail. Not sure it works because I don’t feel a connection with the image. But I do like photographers that try new things and processing!

Rooftop Dining 14/20
Beautiful blue sky! This gives a nice backdrop to the scene. I think the image loses some impact because of the position of the photographer, not in the best location to get the best shot of the couple dinning.

Vietnamese man 14/20
A colourful head and shoulders of this man, skin tones have been handled well. Also very good use of depth of field so the background is out of focus. Just two issues for me, I think a crop off the right to make the image a portrait presentation would be stronger and also the eyes need to be just a bit sharper, the face as a whole is just lacking that critical sharpness to draw the viewer into the image.

Yeomanry Band 14/20
Well positioned action shot – not easy to do! A difficult shot again because of the dark shadows and bright sun, you cant win, for if you waited for them to come into the sun light it would probably have been too bright on their faces and instruments!! Possibly lifting the shadows in post processing would help the image.

Wheelchair Mayhem 17/20
You do like a challenge!! A very difficult shot to take, not only have you movement, lots of bodies, but also the lighting in these Arenas are a nightmare to work with! This image is sharp, the colours are just vibrant enough and the composition is very well done to include the net!

Starstruck (Tina Obrien) 15/20
The eyes!! As with all portraits or just straight forward people shots to me the eyes are so important. You have captured the eyes and skin tones of the young girl perfectly. Good lighting used. I would have awarded this image had it not been for the background – not sure if it’s the right tonal range to complement the image, but it was the slight zoom effect that kept drawing my eye away from the subject, try a different background and I am sure you have an award winning image! 15.

Trying to eavesdrop 14/20
Lovely expressions on the faces of the two ladies in the front of the image. Close crop I like, with the all important inclusion of the out of focus third lady in the background, I think she is key to the image! The image needs more light, I would re do the image and lift the shadows on their faces as this would certainly bring the image to life!

8 - COLOUR SET SUBJECT PDI (FOOD & DRINK)

Selection of olives 14/20
The image looks as if it’s been taken at a food event, where samples are left out for customer to try. Indoors it’s difficult to get the lighting right without setting up your own lights, so your exposure is very good, on camera flash can cause some bright highlights to appear on white glossy surfaces, which can be cloned out later. The composition doesn’t work for me, If you could move the empty dish in the foreground and start the image from the olive trays, getting rid of the pin and logo. Include a little more of the background it would work better for me.

Croissant and coffee 13/20
Although I love this image for its simplicity and photographic quality I don’t feel as if it really fits the set subject of food and drink, they are just too small in the frame. Now put it in an open section titled Social distancing and you would receive a different score.

Bedtime Drinks 15/20
Nicely set up shot, foreground image is nice and sharp; You can almost taste the cream and chocolate. Good use of aperture to diffuse the background cup. When you do still life you are in full control and if you look at the diffused cup there are a few highlights that could be taken down. Darken that back area down a little and this would have gone higher.

Lemon Slice 16/20
I think the simplicity of the colours work well, the lighting has been done really well. For me it just has a little too much negative space on the left, you have positioned the lemon more or less in the middle a square cop still giving you some negative space works really well.

Wheres the vodka 17/20
In the glass I hope. Great shot, well lit, strong colours and diagonals. I would say if your image is being shown on a black background or screen, use a 2px pin line to separate it from the background, because your image is darker at the top it blends in so it looks as you have a black ledge at the bottom.

Cheers 17/20
Again a very nicely done still life, glasses positioned well. Very sharp throughout, great water capture. Personally I like clean edges to my images where possible I would have cloned out a little of the water splash at the top to give it a clean edge. A small thing but can make a difference.

Cake Stand
A Competent piece of photography, good shadow and highlight control. Unfortunately it’s a bit too busy the cake stand is lost among the flowers. You could have added a dark vignette to cut down on some of the brighter distractions, and this would have drawn more attention to the cake stand. 15

Fruit and cream
Well composed image, great reflections. Fruit stands out well from the background. I do think you needed a higher depth of field, or focus on the 3 blueberries in the foreground, as they are the first thing my eye was drawn too, and they are not in focus. With any still life you have full control so remove some of the background items that you have darkened down and simplify it 15

Dinner for One
The warm colour tones draw you into this image, the food items are all portrayed very well, the only element that lets it down is the glass of wine. Firstly you have cut off the top and it’s a little bit too big for the image. A sherry glass would have worked better even a coffee cup would do 14

Bath Beers
Clever Idea it’s certainly different. The beer has been photographed well, My attention did wander around a bit, I like your wooden bath tray! and unfortunately I keep getting drawn to the top of your legs where the light is rather bright a vignette might have been a good idea 15

One Apple or Two
Love this one, beautifully lit, Nicely presented, the square format really works. 20

Coffee Time
Very creative use of coffee and biscuits, very well put together unfortunately for me your background is too busy the clouds distract from the story. A clock face that filled the frame with these items super imposed with a lower opacity would work better for me. 15

Cafe Culture, Paris
Again this is a well taken image, it hints at the subject theme but no food or drink visible 12

Refreshing Drink ??/20
I must say the orange slice is nicely lit and the glass is nicely in focus. The subject is very central in the frame and you have a few artefacts hanging around. For eg: A line to the left of the glass and an oblong cut out shape at the bottom right. A square crop would work well with this image and give a stronger composition.

Honey 15/20
Well seen, stands out from the background the honey is nice and sharp.

Mind The Table 16/20
This little bit of breakfast drama has been well caught, a great idea. It does run downhill a little, I would darken the blacks a bit more and straighten the table. A great fun shot…

Take your pick 14/20
Certainly a lot to choose from, interesting colours and shapes maybe a little overcooked. (sorry).

Estonian Elk Soup 14/20
A lot of atmosphere in the shot, simplicity works well but we are not seeing enough of the produce, the lighting cast by the candle gives a soft glow to the image which works well. It would have done better for me in an open section.

Spicy Market Food 15/20
I can almost imagine the atmosphere and the smells from the area, the food choices are well portrayed, and the steam rising has been well caught, the background has been nicely diffused. My little niggles are the reflection on the lampshade and the fact that you have just clipped the left hand side of the pan.

Lets have nice dinner 14/20
Again the image is about food and drink. I have no technical issues with this image. I just think you have left your subject too central, a square crop works great on this image starting just at the young ladies back.

Vegatable Stall - Vietnam 17/20
This really captures the attention, nice natural colours, lots of texture and it tells a story. A busy image but fits the section perfectly.

Cider Apples 18/20
Beautifully taken shot, nicely positioned, in the frame.

High Tea 14/20
Very posh afternoon tea. Natural soft lighting. A busy image with no real focal point. It is almost an image of 2 halves. It could be simplified by a square crop, practically straight down the middle.

Coffee morning 19/20
This one works well for me. (I am known in Mold for my love of coffee). A simple image that has the Wow factor, the only alteration I would have made was not having stray coffee beans on the edges of my image.

Fibonacci Broccoli 13/20
A nice close up image, great colour and patterns. There is no real focal point in this for me. There is a limited depth of field which makes a good portion of the vegetable out of focus.

Picnic with Strawberries 14/20
Very well presented , great detail. A little too much negative space on the bottom.

Three Onions 17/20
Great Idea, I love the light coming through the colander. It gives the onions a boka look. Darken the edges a little to bring attention to the centre.

Peter sat down to rest 15/20
Great control of the lighting, very well executed photo. The two objects just don’t jell together for me. An egg spoon and soldiers (toast ones of course) would tell more of a story. Nothing wrong with your camera skills, combination doesn’t work for me.

Noodles to go 16/20
Well captured action shot, obviously taken in difficult lighting conditions, a high ISO can make images a bit noisy. A vignette would help draw more attention to the centre of the image and darken the light edges. It does have some atmosphere.

Shellfish salad 15/20
Well presented lunch and image. A little bright on the whites but great angles well thought out presentation.

Circle of Food 17/20
I like the fact you are looking directly down at the food. It’s beautifully sharp, the edges have been darkened so it draws your attention into the centre. Well chosen food groups.

Tastes Like Water 13/20
I Like the shape of the water as it leaves the glass. The background is also very sharp which detracts from the movement you have captured. The foreground is also a little dark maybe a mono conversion would work to strengthen the image.

Straight from the Source 16/20
Great conversion to mono a well processed image. It’s great to see the workings of the factory.

Tipsy 14/20
Great angle to the glass, I like the overall effect it is very grungy looking. The colour tones work well for me, I am not particularly fond of the heavy white line which breaks up the image.

9 - COLOUR SET SUBJECT PDI (CHESTER)

Chester Town Crier 17/20
Good composition, great background, lighting on subject great. Only thing I would say is to look at highlights on the white areas particularly on the finger and in the hair and feather.

Chinese New Year 14/20
Strong image fills the frame, nicely diffused background darkened down well For me the composition lends itself more to a square format, at the moment it head is fairly central.

A Time to Reflect 15/20
Nicely seen, strong reflection in the puddle, very well exposed, I do feel that there is a lot of wasted space around the reflection try a tighter crop.

Lighting Up The Way 13/20
The warm colour tones are attractive, lots of detail in brick work and letter box but there is no real focal point for me, and although the light has been toned down it is still very bright so the eye is drawn to that instead of the rest of the image.

Black and gold 17/20
This is a different view of Chester the background is well diffused and the detail in the metal work is great, attention is drawn to the bits of gold. You have some detail in the sky I think you could tone down the white area to the right of image so it doesn’t draw the eye out of the frame.

Cathedral Sculpture 16/20
This has been handled beautifully it is not an easy task to shoot inside, you have maintained shadow detail throughout and the highlights have also been held in, the diagonal line of the blue sculpture leads you into the image. The only thing I find a little annoying is the brightness of the line hanging the sculpture from the ceiling I know you want to show how its being held but darken it a little.

Bridge Street 14/20
A very graphic image, quite heavily processed, the town shops are nicely framed and there is plenty to look at I did enjoy the glimpses of street life through the bars, it’s a little too over processed for me and in this competition there are stronger images.

Bus Exchange 13/20
Firstly well done for going out on a wet day, the rain provides some nice reflections and brings out the colour in the pavement, lovely and sharp throughout. You have a few distractions in the way of white highlights under the Chester and 2 right on the edge of your frame. And there is no real focal point for me to look at.

Chester Cathedral 17/20
Beautiful image of the church great composition, very well exposed and strong composition, great stopper with the tree trunk. A very small picky thing the two white signs near the tree pull the eye…

Queens Park Bridge 18/20
Strong composition, good lead in lines, well chosen depth of field as it is in focus from back to front.

A City Walls Jog 13/20
It’s a path we have walked many times lots of fabulous detail in the brickwork, the position of the door, jogger and lamp work really well. Unfortunately I really don’t like the heavy sepia Mixed with the monochrome, for me the processing spoilt the image (sorry).

Chester alms houses 15/20
Lovely shadow patterns in the image, well exposed, and strong lead in line, it’s a shame about the car and work sign at the beginning of the picture but it is what it is, but technically it is a strong image. Again I mention the fact that there is no real focal point.

Chester Raft Race 13/20
This was obviously taken before the corona virus, that many people wouldn’t be allowed on the bridge, you have captured the water action well nice detail in the water, it is slightly underexposed in the rest of the image. I also feel giving too much to look at the action is all on the left try a square crop make boat 28 main focus.

River Dee View 14//20
Pleasant river scene, good technical ability, it’s just too busy with no single focus point.

Chester From On High 15/20
Great view point, love the textures and colours in the buildings, try a tighter crop, the sky has some detail but is a bit bland, take it down to the tower and a little off the left, it looks as if it runs downhill could this be straightened slightly.

Old Dee Bridge 16/20
Well framed using the trees, good colour tones, and a moody feel to the whole image. I know you have worked hard on the highlights but I would try adding just a little brightness to the center of the image.

Chester Eastgate Street 16/20
Strong composition, well framed good lead in lines, darken your whites just slightly particularly in the centre.

Queens Park Bridge 14/20
Some unusual processing has gone on here, I really like the low angle and the way it leads you straight into the image. It is just short of that menacing figure in cloak coming towards you.

Brown Goldsmith, The Rows 15/20
Lots of good shape and texture, Definitely a different angle, It’s hard to work out what’s what. I would guess at the floor as it looks like a cigarette but in the bottom right. Or some kind of hatch. competent piece of photography.

Too late for icecream 14/20
Simple composition, night photography is not easy, there are some nice reflections in the water. Unfortunately the light is very bright and draws the attention from the rest of the image.

Chester Morris Dancers 20/20
Bright vibrant image, great looking characters and I love the way you processed the image.

Eastgate clocks 15/20
Wow we are seeing triplicates. You have done a good job of cutting out the clock, I like your positioning on the bridge, I do feel that you could have made your background a little more interesting. By adding textures or clouds.

The Chester Cross 19/20
Very dramatic shot I feel you have made good use of the light and emphasised the darkness of the clouds. Again super composition.

View to the Alter 14/20
Simple colour palette in this image works well. strong lead in lines, good shapes and in most of the image great detail. It’s a little bright where the natural light is coming in through the windows, burning out all of the detail there.

The Legions Parade 15/20
Again a good collection of characters, Use of flash illuminates subject while keeping highlights contained.

Grosvenor Bridge, Chester 14/20
Nicely presented letterbox shot, warm tones in brickwork and pathway draw you into the image. But then there is nothing to keep your attention there.

Still Waters 15/20
The bridge is beautifully lit, warm colour due to nighttime shoot I can’t help but feel that you are giving us to much to look at the bridge on its own without the reflection is really interesting, or maybe a square crop getting rid of the trees on the right.

Twelve Days of Christmas parade 14/20
Good grouping of interesting people. Girls are posing nicely. Lighting on the faces is a little strong and the D on the left side of the road is distracting Try tightening the crop on the girls.

Cloister Gardens 15/20
Higher than normal vantage point works well, interesting shapes and patterns, a smattering of snow or frost adds to the cool feeling.
Some nice light creeping along the walls.

The Tap 15/20
A strong shot of a local bar, good exposure and colour tones. I feel the most interesting part of the image is the bottom half. Try cropping to a letterbox an see what you think.

Chester Cathedral Lock In 14/20
A bit of humour well seen, the subject fills the frame nicely with good detail in the face ,the flash has reflected off the wood a little bit so I would darken down a few of the highlights and maybe put a vignette to darken the edges more so the subject pops more.

Pink door 17/20
I like this! the simplicity works well, the people although not big in the frame give it a focal point.

10 - MONO SET SUBJECT PDI (PUBLIC TRANSPORT)

Easyjet flight 15/20
Well placed in the frame, handled camera very well as this is sharp from front to back!
As we know it’s the use of tones in Mono that make it work, the fact that it was just plain sky has not helped in getting that needed variation of tones, so the image is a little flat.

Lady Diana 16/20
Here we have a good variation of tonal range, the photographer has to be commended on the use of available light, it makes the static boat have a bit more drama to it!
Possible crop to the top so we lose the building on the right would help remove a distraction.

Routemaster Bus 15/20
Well thought out image, I like the photographers thought process in taking a full frontal image, then the wheels turned to your left gives the image a different look. I feel the vignette surround works with the image. As an image I feel the overall tonal finish distracts from the image.

A Manx Tram 15/20
Good positioning of the author for the Horse and tram, added bonus of waiting for the horse to just turn to your right gives it a pleasing effect! And, the all important passenger on the top of the tram all adds to the image. The strength of the image is from the middle of the frame to the right, therefore a portrait image would have been stronger as the left of the image is a distraction.

Gondolas 14/20
Foreground interest is good, great lead in with the Gondola, plus the buildings to the back of the image adds to the interest.
The photographer has set a difficult challenge for themselves, harsh sunlight and water – difficult mix which has produced this burn out effect, possibly the use of filters would have helped – if the opportunity comes your way to take the image again!!

Carriages in Perspective 14/20
This I thought was a clever use of the walk way between the carriages, considering its indoors the photographer has still captured a good tonal range of the mono, the drawback for me was that it has strong leading lines to the middle – but then I have nothing to focus on, it needs either the wall toning down or a person of interest at the end coming towards you!!!

Car ferry 15/20
The theme of transport is well covered here, ferry, cars and bikes.
It has been a bland sky so there is a lack of interest in the top third of the image, harsh sunlight has not helped in making anything stand out as a focal point, so I found as a viewer that I kept moving around the image looking for a point of interest, I was drawn to the sun flares on the car, which in this instance to me added to the image.

Liverpool Lime Street 15/20
The iconic Lime Street, I did enjoy this image as it was a different view to the ones often seen, I like the strong lines, diagonal and vertical. Good tonal range.
I am not sure the composition is strong enough for the competition, sign cut off at the top and the white taxi is just too close to right that is takes me straight out of the image.

Birkenhead Tram 14/20
Trams do make for interesting images, I do like the composition, side view so the tram runs through the image! I think the light has been flat on this particular day, it would benefit from the use of dodging and burning tool to add to the drama of the image.

The Chicago El 19/20
A very enjoyable image, composition is spot on, buildings add to the top part of image – so doesn’t matter what the sky is like! The photographer has pressed the shutter button at just the right time as the train comes into the perfect position for the image, the inclusion of the lamp as a stopper only adds to the image.
Excellent photography!

Crossing the Douro River 14/20
Great vantage point, it reminds me of a trip I made to Porto. I like the sweep of the Douro river, then the train line connecting you to the opposite side. There is no real point of focus, as it’s a transport comp I would like to have seen the Train to be in focus.

All Aboard 14/20
Very strong leading lines from the left taking you through the image. You have managed to get a variation in tonal range.
A well thought out image, but let down a little by the fact that it lacks sharpness in your focus – even if you just got the driver in focus it would have been an excellent Transport mono.

Prague Tramcar 16/20
Sharp, crisp image. Good composition, the use of the walkway to lead you through the image. It is a little static, as a documentary image it is first class, but now it’s being judged against other pictorial images it is not strong enough to take it to the top awards, but can I add this is a good image!

Been Busy Mate 14/20
Straight image, seen the taxi – why he is parked in a side street I am not sure!! I did like the reflection in the puddle with the taxi sign visible, I wonder if there is possible an image to be had in that and part of the car??

Fly me to the moon 17/20
I do like it when photographers think outside the box!! You have taken two elements and very carefully put them together to create a very good image, as its put together you are in control of the exact composition – I agree with you in the placement of the moon, plane and size of the plane all fit together really well.

Platform 2 16/20
I do like the treatment to this image, with the setting of the old luggage and carriages you have made an enjoyable old world effect! Platform 2 sign is key to the image as it creates a triangle from the cases – sign – carriages.

First Class travel 15/20
Nicely framed image of the passengers sat in first class! The contact with the lady only adds to the image. I feel the composition could have been stronger by leaving out the window to the right, for me this just draws my eyes away from the main interest which is the people. I would re do the image and see if using the main window as your frame would improve your image.

Sandbanks Ferry 15/20
Good record of the Ferry, not sure of the treatment given to the image but the way the ferry stands out with its strong lines I do like, but the overall image is a little too harsh for me, especially in a competition that has so many pictorial images.

Holiday Train Rider 15/20
A different form of transport, the photographer has taken on a challenge in photographing the form of transport against such a busy backdrop, therefore going in very close to the subject. I feel that the ‘Train is too dominate and blocking. A very difficult shot to capture. Overall the image is sharp and with none of the trains white showing as burnt out.

Just hanging about (Llandudno cable cars) 15/20
A good vantage point was found to capture the scene. The mono conversion works very well with the dramatic sky in the background. The mode of transport becomes a little lost in the scene, I feel just a crop off the top leaving the top wire coming directly from the top left of the image, also just waiting for the cable car to give a little more separation from the turbines in the background.

London Cabby 14/20
I do like the tight crop presentation; it works as you have left the Taxi signage visible, the framing of the driver works. But, I feel it is important with such a tight crop that the person/driver needs to be sharp.

Old Steam Train 15/20
The train is sharp, the blacks have been handled very well on the train so as to not cause any blocked out areas! A good record of the train and what engine was used but it lacks a little bit of drama that other images present and I feel this is down to composition, straight on images lack drama and storytelling, I would like to have seen more of the sweep of carriages, people getting off and on to the train.

Reaction Ferry 14/20
This looks to be a nice setting! The mono conversion along with the heavy backdrop of the trees makes it difficult for the Ferry to stand out. Possibly a larger image would have had more impact.

Dazzle Boat 14/20
We are in no doubt where this was taken with the iconic buildings in the background. As this is a transport competition, I feel the buildings are to prominent and the Dazzle Boat becomes lost in the scene. Possibly crop the buildings at the top and diffuse the background more to make the boat stand out.

Lisboa Evening Funicular 17/20
Mono and evening light is a great combination! You have the added bonus of cobbled street which capture the light really well. Great atmosphere to the image. It would have gone into the top award had you just lifted the shadows to the right of the image, if you are going to leave them in they need to be just a touch more visible – I have tried lifting shadows and it works as the photographer has captured all the detail.

Look Out 14/20
Very dramatic sky and water! I feel because you have highlighted the wonderful sky you possibly have left too much on, as the boat is becoming insignificant within the image. Tighter crop would help the image become more about the boats.

Thar Desert Taxi 15/20
Extra points for the unique taxi image!! The detail has been captured on the Camel and rider, the framing although tight at the back leg, it works for me because the rest of the image is tightly cropped. The lighting has been a bit harsh, possibly mid day sun creating blacked out parts which are important, to see more detail on the riders face and a bit of light in the eye of the camel!

Old Colonial 15/20
The mono conversion has really brought out the detail in the cobbled road and the bus which works. The sky, although full of drama is a bit to over sharp for me, I would soften it so it’s not competing with the Bus. Sometimes an image calls for ‘putting right what’s not wrong’ in that although the road was going downhill, if you straightened it the image becomes more balanced.

The good old days of transport 15/20
An image about shapes and strong lines within transport of old! When your presented with so much to photograph in the transport museums it’s difficult to know how much to give the viewer to look at, I feel the impact of the ‘Lion’ engine is lost because of the inclusion of the roof, maybe looking for a close up of the engine in the foreground would have made more of an impact.

The Last Bus Ride 13/20
I enjoyed looking at the perfect reflection of the bus. I have a feeling that this is an image of a collectable bus miniature. Although its interesting, it does lose impact as an image for me because the heavy black space around it leaves me with no story about it, also if we present a minimalistic image it does need to be critically sharp.

Waterloo Departures 18/20
The image straight away has impact because we have movement and a strong story/message to me as a viewer! Well done to the photographer for presenting a difficult shot, although we don’t see the actual transport – to me it fits the competition as it leaves us in no doubt as to where it was taken!

Lakeland Cruiser 15/20
I do like the composition of the image, the photographer has waited for the right moment to take the shot, the background is clear but not intrusive to the boat, as for the boat, it is sharp and whites handled really well. I think it would benefit from a bit of dodge and burn to the lower part of the image, the water could be toned down just a wee bit!

Orme Tramway, passing point. 14/20
Perfect timing as the trams pass each other! I like the sweep of the track taking you through the image. The portrait presentation works for me, but I feel there was more of an opportunity to add more tonal range, there is to much grey tones which make the image appear flat, but this can be fixed in post processing.

Pod 15/20
London Eye, the composition here makes it look like a space craft – great shot! Again it’s one of those events that presents you with so much to photograph, do you photograph parliament building, The Mall or just the city??? The photographer has chosen and presented us with the pod in front, is this enough? For me I like the shape but I soon lose interest in that and either want to see the people inside or I want to look over it to see the city – the pod alone isn’t a strong enough focal point for me – although I must add this is a very sharp image.

Tram Blackpool 14/20
Typical day at the beach – raining!!!! Captured the mode of transport, very clear, no highlights or darkened out areas. Because it was a overcast day it has resulted in a flat tonal range, possibly more dodging and burning would help.

Lucerne Cruise 15/20
Perfect timing, the river cruise is just in sync with the backdrop, recession of trees leading to the mountain range is perfect. I feel the composition of the image is right with just enough lead in with the water to the cruiser. I do feel you have been unlucky with the weather, it looks to be a little hazy so results in a lack of detail.

The Last Tram to the Opera 16/20
Great detail of both the building and the tram. Tones are good throughout the image with an interesting sky. No faults with the image.

Mind Your Step 14/20
Again we have the combination of mono and cobbles, patterns on the road and it works. Nice use of the tram lines to lead you into the image. Overall a good image, the only drawback for me was the sky seems to be overdone, over sharpened which detracts from the overall image.

Venician River taxi 16/20
Well taken image, moving boat but very sharp from front to back which tells us the photographer has good camera skills. The fact you can see the faces of the people all adds to the image for me. The photographer has chosen a tight crop which works because it is emphasising the transport rather than the place.

The Mersey Ferry 14/20
First thought was – can they really get that many people on board!!! The boat is well placed, I think because its been not the best of days so the sky is very bland, crop as much as possible off the top of the image.

Virgin cruise liner in Liverpool plus ferry 14/20
I was amazed as to the size of the cruise liner! An interesting image showing the size and comparison to the city. I do feel it would have had a greater impact if in post processing the photographer was to crop off the top third of the image, then the impact of size would have been greater.

Waiting for the next train 20/20
This is a truly wonderful shot! Indoors, so lighting is difficult but spot on! Then the movement of the train, just right! Then the all important inclusion of the waiting passenger! All the elements work so well together.
